Please note: This movie is based loosely on Polynesian mythology. It received some bad press for not being accurate enough in the way the islanders and their gods are portrayed. If you are sensitive to this, I suggest using it as a teaching tool and asking your students to compare the movie to the real history. Perhaps do a short unit on Polynesian history so the record is clear for your students. It may be worth it to have a classroom discussion about movies that are based on real life events and how they shouldn't be considered the historical authority for that event.
Note: If you like Hamilton and Lin-Manuel Miranda's genius then you'll enjoy the original songs he wrote for the movie. If your a super Hamilton fan, the style is unmistakable. I had flashbacks from Hamilton while watching this film : )
