The Butler Movie Guide

The Butler is based on the true story of a man who served 8 presidents as a butler in the White House. This movie guide will help students learn about American history, but specifically about the civil rights movement. Give students the opportunity to sympathize with the struggles that happened during this difficult time in history. Discuss with your students the 11 high-level short answer and essay questions in this 5 page PDF movie guide. Pause at the designated times on the movie guide for each question and watch your students actively engage with what they have been watching. Please see the product images for example questions from this movie guide and download a free, complete movie guide for Kung Fu Panda 3 to see the general quality of my questions and movie guides.

Is The Butler a safe movie for my students or my kids?

The Butler movie guide is a must have if you are showing this movie in class. The 5 page study guide can help students learn about an important part of our history: the civil rights movement.  An answer key is not included as many questions are open-ended and encourage students to analyze the film by constructing their own meaning from the characters’ dialogue and behavior. Please see the product images for example questions.

Here are my tips for using The Butler movie guide in your classroom:

  1. Print one, double-sided movie guide for each student
  2. Preview each question on the movie guide as you come to it before resuming the movie
  3. Pause at the times designated on the movie guide and help students if necessary
    • Discussion here is great, encourage and allow students to share their ideas and thoughts for any question
    • Discourage students from simply copying answers
    • If needed, and if time allows, feel free to rewind and show important parts of the movie for additional analysis
  4. After completing the short answers on the movie guide, allow 5-10 minutes for each essay question at the end
  5. On average, completing this movie guide will require about 30-45 minutes in addition to the length of the movie
