An excerpt from the Teacher’s Lesson Plan:
Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEJd2RyGm8Q to prepare the music video and make sure the sound and all of your equipment is working ahead of time.
NOTE: If the link above doesn’t work, simply search “The Greatest Show” in the youtube search bar and other links to the music video should appear.
Introduce the music video of the day and distribute the handout.
A) Optional: Create groups of 2-4 students and ask them to work together to write the lyrics on their handout as accurately as possible.
B) Optional: Create a prize or reward structure for the team that gets the most words correct on their handout.
B) Tell students that the video will play 5 times for each section (this number worked well for my class, but feel free to adapt accordingly)
Play the song 5 times for each time stamped section.
A) Remind students to talk quietly in their groups so that other students won’t hear their answers.
Note: The time stamps align with the youtube clip above titled “The Greatest Show (from The Greatest Showman Soundtrack) [Official Audio]”
Grade by asking teams to switch their handout with another team.
A) To grade, either distribute the answer key to teams or use a music video that shows the lyrics to the song by searching the internet for “The Greatest Show Lyrics Video””
B) Each blank is worth one point. At times, if a word is really close, I’ll let teams challenge the grade and sometimes I’ll award them an extra point.
C) Optional: Find the team with the most points and distribute their rewards.
Thinking Critically
A) Ask students to think about, discuss and share their thoughts in regards to the final question.
B) Randomly select students to share what their teams discussed.
C) Optional: Additional points can be awarded to teams with solid answers.
Debrief with the students. Randomly select students to share their thoughts about which words were the hardest to understand. Ask students how this can help them be better communicators.
A) Optional: If you like to make your students laugh, they will probably enjoy a rendition of you singing the song and using the incorrect words that students guessed.
