This Hamilton movie guide helps students engage with the filmed Broadway production through character analysis, lyric study, conflict, and historical interpretation. Use the questions to track Hamilton and Burr, examine how songs shape meaning, and spark discussion about legacy, ambition, and the costs of personal rivalry.
This resource consists of 19 high-level, short answer and essay questions that will do more than just ask your students to regurgitate information. See the thumbnail images for sample questions.
Notes:
- If using the digital version of the lesson, students may need to find an alternative way to answer question #12 which requires students to annotate on top of lyrics on the printed guide.
- The last question requires students to have internet access to read primary sources.
- I recommend printing out the lyrics or having students follow along on their digital devices. https://www.lyrics.com/lyric/32212242/Alexander+Hamilton
This movie guide is included in two different film elective full-year curriculums:
- Film Studies & Movie Analysis Curriculum — A lighter, plug-and-play sequence of mainstream (mostly G–PG-13) films with strong subtitles that are easy to stream on Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video—ideal for mixed-readiness, intro classes.
- Film as Literature & Cinematic Arts Curriculum — A more rigorous track built around canonical, mature titles prized for depth and analysis—iconic selections that may be harder to source, best for honors/AP-bridge and seminar-style courses.

Here are my tips for using Hamilton Movie Guide (PG13 - 2020) in your classroom:
- Print one, double-sided movie guide for each student
- Preview each question on the movie guide as you come to it before resuming the movie
- Pause at the times designated on the movie guide and help students if necessary
- Discussion here is great, encourage and allow students to share their ideas and thoughts for any question
- Discourage students from simply copying answers
- If needed, and if time allows, feel free to rewind and show important parts of the movie for additional analysis
- After completing the short answers on the movie guide, allow 5-10 minutes for each essay question at the end
- On average, completing this movie guide will require about 30-45 minutes in addition to the length of the movie
